Lift The Veil From Your Heart

People often misunderstand why I cover up so,

People often stop and stare in lands unknown,
Lands I do not call home

To the veil and the modest cloth of a Muslim female

People often are ignorant,

Say we are oppressed,

When in fact we are free

And cover ourselves as you cover your diamonds,

We are precious, must be hidden,

This does not make us different to you, oh eve,

We are female, but we are free.

  1. “This does not make us different to you, oh eve,

We are female, but we are free.”

    Those last lines are amazing!
They’re true even in their literary form, just as they are metaphorically.

    Beautiful piece, Maryam 🙂
